An aiding technology in fighting cholesterol

One of the greatest benefits provided is not interfering with blood sugar, which makes it particularly suitable for diabetic and pre-diabetic people, and also does not affect retroviral cocktails and may be used by HIV patients.

High levels of blood fat cause cholesterol indexes (LDL) to rise above recommended values, with ideal values around 50mg/dL, which may cause various and severe diseases, with over 50% risk of heart attacks and 25% of strokes. Besides, 40% of Brazilian people have high cholesterol levels, according to the Ministry of Health.

Cholesterol is a type of fat that aids in bodily functions. However, there are two types of cholesterol which should be monitored: LDL and HDL. LDL, commonly known as "bad cholesterol", causes accumulation of fat in blood vessels, which may cause cardiovascular events, and even cardiovascular mortality. On the other hand, HDL, commonly known as "good cholesterol", works in removing bad cholesterol from the blood flow and transporting it to the liver, where it is metabolized and eliminated from the body.

"The only way to know if someone has high cholesterol is through a blood test. It is then possible to measure total cholesterol and its fractions in the blood flow, in other words, good and bad cholesterol. If total cholesterol (TC) is higher than 190 mg/dL, caution should be exercised", explains the physician and endocrinology professor at the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, Dr.  Ruy Lyra.

The Brazilian market sells an innovative statin variant for treatment of heart conditions: Pitavastatin. "Statins inhibit cholesterol production in the liver (the greatest source of cholesterol in the body) and increase removal of bad cholesterol from the blood by the liver, decreasing total cholesterol levels. They also help reducing blood fat levels, as well as improving artery elasticity. Pitavastatin is the most recent in the market, among all statins, and includes additional benefits such as not interfering with glycemia (blood sugar levels). This pitavastatin feature provides potential for use by diabetic and pre-diabetic patients, among others. It also does not interfere with the effects of retroviral cocktails nd may be used by HIV patients. These are invaluable features for these patient groups, although all patients with high cholesterol levels may use this type of statin", explains Prof. Ruy Lyra.

A significant part of the population suffers from Metabolic Syndrome, which is a set of risk factors present in an individual's body that increase the chances of development of heart diseases, such as central obesity (waistline circumference above 88 cm in women and 102 cm in men), dyslipidemia, high blood pressure and blood sugar changes, even type 2 diabetes, among other issues.

According to the specialist, the main reasons that lead to high bad cholesterol levels are: genetic factors, diabetes, tobacco use, overweight and physical inactivity.  Therefore, the best way to prevent high cholesterol is, above all, to eat healthy. "Lots of fruit, fresh vegetables, as well as low fat, fiber-rich food, must be part of meals every day. Also it is important to avoid fried food, fatty meats and alcohol in excess. Along with a healthy diet, exercising is invaluable for the body to function as a whole. Also, don't smoke!", warns the endocrinologist.
