Atopic dermatitis is a chronic disease, but it can be controlled

An allergic manifestation, as well as diarrhea and vomiting, atopic dermatitis is a chronic skin disease caused by an imbalance in the immune system, which generates an exaggerated inflammatory response and breakdown of the skin barrier. The bad news is that like all chronic pathologies, there is no remedy that will eliminate the problem. The good news is that it can be controlled. "Although the causes of the imbalance that generates this condition are unclear, genetic factors are known to play a major role. The problem is more likely to occur in families with a history of allergies, such as asthma or rhinitis," says pediatrician and clinical nutritionist Dr. Fábio Ancona.
Excessive itching, redness and lesions of the skin are the most well-known and recurring symptoms of atopic dermatitis. The disease usually appears in early childhood. In this age group, there are few treatment choices to minimize the symptoms. However, safe options can be found in pimecrolimus-based products, a topical anti-inflammatory.
"Parents need to pay close attention to the type of treatment offered for the children. The role of the pediatrician is key, as toxicity levels in most medications (such as corticosteroids) is high for the youth exposure. But that does not mean that the patient will be left untreated, since there are suitable and safe options, especially products based on pimecrolimus, which can be used in children older than three months of age. Adult patients also need to pay attention", explains Dr. Fábio Ancona, who also emphasizes that cream formulas are better absorbed.
"It is possible to live without itching, sleep well and have healthy skin even while facing the disease, but it is also necessary to see a doctor for the best treatment. Controlling the condition is key", concludes the specialist.
