Rice protein is the new option for nutrition of children with cow’s milk allergy

FREQUENT CRYING, DIARRHEA, VOMIT, WEIGHT LOSS AND OCCURRENCE OF DERMATITIS ARE EVENTS CAUSED BY CMPA.

Cow’s Milk Protein Allergy (CMPA) is the most frequent food allergy in the first phase of babies’ life, reaching 2 to 3% of the children aging less than 3 years old. The lack of an accurate diagnosis can increase the risks, and in extreme cases, it can even cause death from anaphylaxis, which is the most severe reaction caused by animal protein allergy. In addition to ingestion of milk, its derived products, such as cheese, yoghourt and juices can also trigger this hypersensitiveness.
According to the pediatrician with expertise in child nutrition, Dr. Fábio Ancona, the cause of CMPA has not been completely defined, once several factors can contribute to its onset. “Children’s bowel is immature and early ingestion of cow’s milk protein can contribute to the rise of allergy”, the doctor warns. Genetic predisposition is other cause associated to the development of this food allergy.

RICE PROTEIN IS ONE OF THE INDICATED OPTIONS

Eliminating cow’s milk and milk derived products from children’s diet is the first step for treatment of CMPA. Formulas with hydrolyzed proteins and soy-based proteins are the most recurrent substitutes of lactic products. However, hydrolyzed proteins do not taste nice to children and are invariably rejected. Regarding soy, it is contraindicated by Sociedade Brasileira de Pediatria (SBP) for the first six months of life, due to the possibility to interfere with hormonal profile.
Rice protein-based food supplementation is one of the most indicated choices and is now available in Brazilian market. “Rice-based infant formula is an excellent alternative to fight CMPA, with no competitors in the country yet.  Rice protein tastes nicer and eliminates the risk of allergy reactions caused by milk. Thus, it provides a higher quality life, an adequate development and the ideal supply of nutrients to the child”, Dr. Fábio Ancona highlights.
