Are intense vomits during the pregnancy usual?

During the pregnancy, nausea and vomit are considered as usual, and about 80% of the pregnant women present those symptoms. However, when the condition of nausea and vomit reach a moderate level, with condition of vomits above three episodes a day and extended periods of nausea, the use of drugs becomes fundamental. Some women present conditions of nausea and vomit considered as serious, that is, the symptoms are present up to ten times a day and it requires attention, care and has treatment.
“In 85% of the cases, the resolution may be spontaneous or through simple measures of change of habits, such as avoiding drinking liquids right after waking up, avoiding fatty, hot food and sodas”, explained Dr. Antonio Carlos Vieira Cabral, Doctor of Obstetrics by UNIFESP and associate professor of Obstetrics at the Medical School of Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG).
Dr. Antonio Cabral highlights that “for 1% of the pregnant women, those symptoms evolve to serious conditions of nausea and vomit, named hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), a serious problem that requires an appropriate treatment. Pregnant women with hyperemesis may have an accentuated weight loss (more than 20% of the weight prior to the pregnancy), dehydration and metabolic alterations, which lead to the worsening of the general condition and important repercussions for mother and fetus, which require hospital admission”, he explained.
Women presenting altered conditions need to receive drugs named antiemetic in order to relieve the symptoms, avoid maternal dehydration and alterations in the organism functioning.
“The safety of some antiemetic drugs was successfully tested. Among the drugs used in Brazil, ondasentron may be used without any risk of fetal malformation and compromise of the child’s neural development. Ondasentron may be used in all levels of nausea and vomit, pursuant to the study of the Food and Drug Association – FDA, an entity of the US Government, created in 1962, in order to control food and drugs through several tests and researches”, highlighted the specialist.
