Around 15 million Brazilians have osteoarthritis (OA), according to Ministry of Health. However, what is this disease and why is it in the fourth position in the ranking of pathologies responsible for life quality loss, according to World Health Organization (WHO)? Understand more about osteoarthritis.

WHAT IS OSTEOARTHRITIS?
Osteoarthritis (OA), also known as arthrosis, is a degenerative and inflammatory joint disease, with no cure yet, which specially attacks knee, hip, spine and hands joints.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES AND THE MAIN VICTIMS OF THIS PATHOLOGY?
The disease can have different causes: posttraumatic, age, genetic issues, excessive weight and obesity. The elderly is the age range most affected by this pathology, but what we have seen is a considerable growth of young people being diagnosed with OA. This is because of two extremes of this age range in relation to physical activity practice. One portion of the young people is sedentary and with a tendency towards increased weight and obesity. On the other hand, there are some people who practice exercise excessively, generating joint overload, and in many cases, they also exercise in the wrong way, worsening even more the condition.

WHAT ARE THE CONSEQUENCES OF THE DISEASE?
According to WHO, OA is in the fourth position in the ranking of pathologies responsible for life quality loss. The person who has arthritis suffers a lot of pain, rigidity and joint locking, leading to a reduced mobility.

WHAT ARE THE TREATMENT OPTIONS?
There are several options, which can help the patient to have a better life quality. In severe cases, knee and hip prosthesis are considered options. Ideally, symptoms should be treated as minimally invasive as possible. For this purpose, a great ally are the collagen peptides (Peptan®), which help recovering the cartilage, in addition to have a prolonged analgesic and antiflammatory effect. Supplementation with chelated minerals and vitamin E, both antioxidants, has also shown to be very important to these patients, once one of the causes or consequences of OA can be oxidative stress, when the organism does not produce the required quantity of antioxidants to fight free radicals.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO HAVE A NORMAL LIFE WITH OA?
Yes, if you are not a high-performance athlete, because in this case you would have to change your career. Nevertheless, for those who are not athletes, life can be normal if treatment is correctly followed.
