Can physical activity be harmful to your health?

Published in September 05, 2024

The end of the year is approaching and you, if you haven't already, are going to pick up your list of goals and be proud of all your achievements so far. Some goals may have been put aside due to the intense routine, but don't worry, when it comes to health there's always something we can do to improve. So how about taking advantage of the turn of the year to put down on paper (and put into practice) the goals that are still outstanding and create new ones for the year ahead. One example: taking up a sport or physical activity.

If you're the type of person who finds it difficult to exercise, or if you're just starting out, don't go beyond your limits, do it slowly and in your own time. Remember the popular saying: "slow goes a long way". The most important thing is to be consistent and keep practicing. After all, physical activity is for life.

It's common to increase the limit from the previous day or week in order to improve endurance. But this should be done progressively and, whenever possible, under professional guidance. If the progression is sudden, you may feel fatigue or a burning sensation in your muscles due to the great effort. The important thing is to know how to differentiate between the signs so that you don't exceed your body's limits.

According to a study by the Brazilian Society of Exercise and Sports Medicine, an average of one in five people who play sports suffer injuries. That's quite a lot. The most prevalent physical problems are contusions (39.6%), dislocations (30.2%) and strains (11.3%). Please note: soccer and weight training are the activities in which the most injuries occur.

The human body has a pre-defined self-preservation system, which means that it will warn you when it has reached maximum effort. Therefore, cramps, nausea, tremors, headache, high temperature, blurred or darkened vision and fainting should be taken seriously. The feeling that you don't have enough strength to perform the movements and loss of motor coordination are also warning signs.

The consequences of high-intensity exercise without adequate physical preparation and suddenly can be muscle, joint and tendon problems, as well as those that affect immunity and even the cardiovascular system.

With a doctor's supervision, supplementation with a formula that combines hydrolyzed collagen, non-hydrolyzed type II collagen and hyaluronic acid can contribute to the maintenance of articular cartilage. These components promote complementary and synergistic action, reducing the inflammatory process, improving cartilage functionality and providing quality of life for those seeking healthier lifestyles.

Attention and care are important, which doesn't mean giving up physical activity. On the contrary! It's essential to keep active, which should become a constant practice. Here's how to exercise comfortably and safely:

. Before you start exercising, make an appointment with your doctor to check your health;
. Choose a qualified professional to monitor your workouts. This way you can reduce the risk of movements that damage or wear out your muscles;
. Follow a daily exercise routine to achieve the necessary fitness and avoid injuries;
. Stretch your whole body before (and after) any physical activity;
. Opt for a diet rich in nutrients, with proteins and carbohydrates, to further help prevent muscle injuries;
. Hydrate before, during and after exercise;
. Give your body the right rest breaks during and after physical activity. This practice is also very important for the body to recover and evolve;
. Watch out for excessive pain or discomfort during and after practice.

Talk to doctors and physical educators to understand your body's needs and choose the best sport. The important thing is to keep moving - always within your limits!
