Sweating is part of it, but not too much!

Published in December 10th, 2024

Sweating is a natural function of our bodies. On average, we release about a liter of sweat a day, but the amount can reach ten liters ? especially on hot days and during physical exercise.

This process is known as sweating. We usually sweat to cool our bodies down, through thermoregulation. It works like this: when our body temperature rises, our brain sends signals to more than 3 million glands which release a colorless liquid made up of 99% of water and 1% of mineral salts, sodium and urea - this is sweat. And as it evaporates from the skin, it reduces and rebalances the body's temperature.

Hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating that can occur all over the body, but the armpits, hands, soles of the feet, inguinal and perineal regions, face and head are usually the most affected areas. It's all caused by hyperfunction of the glands.

That's why you need to be aware that the disease - yes, it is a disease - can be mild, moderate or severe. This means that it can last for months or a lifetime, with symptoms that can sometimes be challenging.

One of the signs that you're sweating more than you need to is excessive sweating for at least 6 months for no apparent reason, sweating a lot in everyday situations that don't require exertion and a family history of hyperhidrosis.

This condition is diagnosed clinically, taking into account each patient's complaints and the factors that can trigger it, such as family history, psychological stress, continuous exposure to the sun on very hot days and excessive physical activity.

Combating excessive sweating may not be an easy task. First, you need to identify the cause and the levels of the disorder.

In addition, there are some changes in habits that can improve your quality of life. They are:

. Use antiperspirants indicated by the doctor.
. Prefer shoes and socks made from natural materials such as linen and cotton.
. Try to wear light clothing, preferably cotton.
. Dry the affected areas well after bathing, this will help the antiperspirants to adhere.
. Avoid foods that stimulate sweating, such as spicy foods, alcoholic or caffeinated drinks.

Hyperhidrosis is not a serious illness, but it can compromise quality of life and interfere with social, school or professional activities. Seek medical help to find the right treatment for you!
