Prebiotics can be allies of immunity

Published in February 05, 2025

In our digestive system, there is a microscopic universe of bacteria known as the intestinal microbiota, responsible for the functioning of the immune system, absorption of nutrients, production of vitamins and control of the proliferation of bacteria harmful to the gastrointestinal tract. In this ecosystem, prebiotics play a key role in digestion and maintaining immunity.

But what are prebiotics anyway? They are non-digestible fibers that serve as food for beneficial bacteria in the intestine, such as bifidobacteria and lactobacilli. These bacteria not only promote gastrointestinal health but also help regulate the immune system, controlling the body's response to pathogens.

By stimulating the growth and activity of these "good" bacteria, prebiotics create a safe intestinal environment in which harmful bacteria have difficulty proliferating. This balance reduces the risk of intestinal inflammation, improving various conditions such as constipation, acid reflux and irritable bowel syndrome.

The benefits don't stop there! They also support the body's immune response by increasing the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines and strengthening the response to vaccines. In addition, they can increase the production of immunoglobulins, which are essential for defense against infections.

Therefore, increasing the consumption of foods rich in prebiotics, such as garlic, onions, legumes, asparagus and bananas, as part of a balanced diet, helps to promote not only intestinal health, but also to strengthen the body's immunity.

In certain cases, food alone may not be enough, making it necessary to prebiotic supplementation. Especially in cases of imbalance in the intestinal microbiota, known as dysbiosis, which can occur due to various factors, such as prolonged antibiotic therapy, physical or mental stress and chronic diseases.

It's important to note that, despite the importance of prebiotics, excessive consumption without professional guidance is not recommended. Each organism is unique, with its own needs and health conditions. Therefore, what is beneficial for one person may not be for another.

Taking care of the intestinal microbiota not only influences digestion, but also our ability to resist disease and maintain a general state of well-being!
