Proper nutrition with a higher level of lactose resolves constipation in babies, in the absence of breastfeeding

Published in June 22nd, 2020

When a baby is born, it is common to have one of the so-called "functional disorders of the digestive system". Despite the complex name, this is a relatively normal condition, especially when the child's digestive system is not yet fully formed, which happens in the first few months of life.

As a result of this condition, babies can have three problems: colic, reflux and constipation, the latter being the least mentioned by parents, but not the least important. Constipation is the difficulty or lack of evacuation. In this case, the child feels pain to eliminate the stool and has to make a great effort to do so. This is due to a low stool elimination reflex or less bowel movement than normal.

"The ideal is to offer the child suitable nutritional formulas with a higher level of lactose, which helps the excretion of water in the colon and increases intestinal motility. Studies show that 91.6% of constipation cases were resolved within 7 days with essential mineral formulations such as magnesium, calcium and phosphorus, which are essential for reducing symptoms. This recommendation is for children who do not receive breast milk, as it will always be the first indication," says Prof. Dr. Fábio Ancona, a pediatrician specializing in infant nutrition.

According to the pediatrician, products with this formulation reduce the pain and difficulty of defecation and even help to increase children's appetite. Prof. Ancona warns against formulas for two or more symptoms of a functional disorder of the digestive system, "because as one improves, the other tends to get worse". He says that to solve the problem of constipation it is necessary to offer more lactose, but for colic less. "Therefore, a single formula can't address both symptoms," explains the specialist.

For babies who are no longer breastfed by their mothers, you can find various formula options to help control constipation. However, the pediatrician's advice is needed to identify the most suitable option, as in these cases the formula will replace the milk used and therefore needs to offer all the necessary benefits, plus those specific to constipation.

"In the first few months of life, a baby's bowel rhythm is irregular. Only over time does it mature and become routine. Parents need to be attentive to their child's reaction to bowel movements, because although there is no treatment, there are nutritional formulas indicated to reduce the symptoms," says the pediatrician.

The specialist points out that constipation is not a disease, but its symptoms can affect the quality of life of the baby and the whole family. With difficulty evacuating, the child tends to become irritable and cries more than usual. In older children, constipation can be associated with fear. This is why the process of changing diapers needs to be natural and peaceful, avoiding trauma when going to the bathroom.
