Mother's Month: Biolab Cast discusses how family history influences heart health
Special episode brings important warnings about prevention and care of cardiovascular diseases
Many hereditary diseases go unnoticed until the symptoms appear, sometimes suddenly and seriously. This was the theme of the special episode of Biolab Cast, Biolab Farmacêutica's podcast in honor of Mother's Month. The chat was mediated by journalist and presenter Daiana Garbin, and included the participation of Dr. Glaucia Morais de Oliveira, president of the Women's Cardiology Department of the Brazilian Society of Cardiology (SBC) and full professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), as well as digital influencer and physiotherapist Paula Chiarato.
One of the main focuses of the conversation was cardiovascular disease, which continues to be one of the biggest causes of death in Brazil and often progresses silently. This scenario is even more worrying among women, who have a higher risk of mortality from heart attacks than men.
Dr. Glaucia stresses the importance of knowing and sharing your family history with your doctor as an effective form of prevention. "Knowing what close relatives have faced and at what age can make all the difference. A well-known history can be a powerful tool for detecting risks early on," she says.
During the episode, Paula Chiarato shared a personal story: her husband, despite leading an active life and eating a balanced diet, suffered a heart attack at the age of 38. "We knew he had high cholesterol, a compromised artery and a family history. But we never thought it would happen to us," she says.
Another topic discussed was pregnancy as a key time to assess a woman's cardiovascular health. Dr. Glaucia explains that conditions such as gestational diabetes or changes in blood glucose significantly increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes after pregnancy. "Pregnancy is a window of opportunity to understand the body and act preventively," she explains. She also mentioned smoking, obesity, depression and anxiety as factors that deserve special attention.
Even with healthy habits, the doctor stresses that they are no substitute for preventive examinations. "Knowing your family history is essential for taking care of heart health, not just for mothers, but for the whole family," she concludes.
