It's a cat's world and they know it: why is the feline population increasing in Brazil?
"Gateiros", the second episode of the Biolab Cast Conectados videocast, discusses the personality of cats and the increase in the feline population in Brazilian homes, which is expected to reach 40 million by 2030. The more individualistic personality of cats is highlighted in the episode. It is often mistaken for a lack of affection between cats and humans, but anyone who thinks that cats don't feel affection for their guardians is mistaken. The program explores cats' personality traits, ways of caring for them and their relationship with humans as pets.
The episode features Dr. Mariane Silva, a veterinary surgeon from the University of São Paulo (USP), specializing in feline medicine, with a Master's degree in Science from USP, professor of Clinical Medicine at the São Judas University and coordinator of the Núcleo de Medicina Felina Ranvier Institute. The Biolab Cast Conectados presentation is led by Dr. Luiz Dieckmann, a psychiatrist, and co-host Dr. Paula Dieckmann, a specialist in Neurology from the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP-EPM).
Because they take up little space and require less attention than dogs, cats are gaining popularity in homes. Dr. Paula Dieckmann provides data on the increase in the cat population, which is growing at twice the rate of dogs.
Mariane Silva explains that part of this growth is due to the verticalization of large cities, which ends up limiting space. It's also down to routine, "because people are working more and spending more time away from home. Dogs require more attention, such as going for a walk in the morning and evening, and people have less time for this. In general, cats are more individualistic. For them, spending the whole day alone is wonderful," says the expert.
